Become a Lead Safe Worker
Are you looking for work? Do you have handyperson experience? Visit the Lead Safe Resource Center to learn about workforce development opportunities such as EPA Renovation, Repair, & Painting, and Clearance Technician classes.
Lead safe work practices are used to protect families when you or a contractor disturbs old paint in homes built before 1978. These practices include working wet, using lead safe containment and clean-up practices, reducing dust and fumes created during renovation, and wearing protective gear.
Lead-based paint may be found on any surface in the home—inside or outside. When lead-based paint is disturbed during renovation, repair or painting activities, dangerous amounts of lead dust can be created.
Jobs such as demolition, window replacement, opening up walls, etc., can also release accumulated lead dust into the home. Even after a typical renovation cleanup, dangerous levels of lead dust can remain.
The Lead Safe Cleveland Coalition is offering free training for people interested in becoming a lead safe worker.
Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP) Certification
Description & Qualifications: Remediation means fixing a property to make it lead safe! If you are a handyperson, contractor, or property owner/manager hoping to complete work on properties, this U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified training will equip you with skill and knowledge to join the workforce. Please note, landlords/property managers who want to complete work on their own properties, are required by federal law to have this certification. To participate in the class, your properties must be registered and verified with the City of Cleveland Building and Housing Department.
Clearance Technician Certification
Description & Qualifications: Lead Clearance is the examination that determines a property to be lead safe. This training will equip you with the skills necessary to complete a Lead Clearance. If you are interested in entering the workforce, there is no experience necessary for this entry level training opportunity!
Hands-On Vetting Experience
Description & Qualifications: The hands-on vetting experience serves two purposes: 1) The training offers an opportunity to receive hands-on engagement and experience for either completing lead safe remediation work and/or completing lead clearance examinations on properties in Cleveland and 2) The completion of this training provides an opportunity to be added to the vetted list of contracted workers that will be publicized for the city of Cleveland community!
